What rights do I have under FERPA?
FERPA covers the rights of the student to privacy.

But I'm the one paying the tuition! Surely I have a right to see my child's grades/class schedule/receive the bill!
You have no inherent right to inspect your child's educational records if he or she refuses to give them to you.

There are 4 ways you may legally receive access to your child's education records from UAB:

1. Your child may complete an online form through BlazerNET and send you a password to allow access to FERPA-protected information
2. Your child may sign a parental grade release
3. You provide evidence to the Registrar's Office that you claimed the student as a financial dependent on your most recent Federal Income Tax form
4. Through a lawfully-issued subpoena or court order

How can my student give me permission to access the information?
Your student may complete a form through BlazerNET to give a parent or guest access to certain FERPA-protected information, and to send a password of your student's choice to your email address. You will then use your email address and the password the student provided to sign in to www.uab.edu/parentaccess.
This permission must be renewed annually by the student.

What if the student is still a minor?
When a student reaches the age of 18, or begins attending a post-secondary institution regardless of age, FERPA rights transfer to the student.
